The protests over Ellis’ death prompted authorities to call the National Guard to help with security. In 2021, James Bible, an attorney who has worked for the Ellis family, denounced findings by the city that cleared some officers in the case.
“What the City of Tacoma really told you all is that they advocate and allow their officers to be able to do whatever they want to bodies of black people when they’re walking home from 7-Eleven,” Bible said.According to the Tacoma News Tribune, the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department and the Pierce County Emergency Operations Center were involved with security preparations.
