. The education dollars the United States does provide to Native Americans are not a handout, but are. Despite this treaty obligation, funding continuously falls short of the needs of TCUs.

In an April 2020 press release from the American Indian Higher Education Consortium , TCUs across the countryjust in facility repair and rehabilitation needs. While classes move online for an indefinite period of time, the AIHEC is calling on Congress to fund technology and internet infrastructure at TCUs. While the industry standard is to replace technology every three to five years, the average lifespan for a computer at a TCU is more than eight.

“Sometimes focusing on schoolwork can feel kind of surreal,” Neosh shared. “You know, at such a bleak time when people are getting sick.” But Neosh is not going to let the coronavirus knock her off track. She is still planning to graduate on time and is grateful for how her school has handled the transition, telling, “They’re giving us as many opportunities to succeed as possible.” And that’s what she loves about going to a tribal college. She feels grounded in a community that shares her values and where people take care of one another.

“Students, I know, are digging into their own pocket and they don’t have that much money themselves, but they’re giving it to these elders,” Neosh said. “There’s a resilience in Indigenous communities. It’s really beautiful.”
