Three people have been convicted on modern slavery charges after a woman they coerced to come to the UK was forced to give up her newborn baby and sleep on a kitchen floor.
The victim was subjected to violence and intimidation by relatives, headed by her abusive aunt, who stole thousands of pounds from her in wages.
Instead she was forced to stay in an overcrowded property in Saxon Road, Peterborough and made to cook, clean and even shoplift on behalf of her abusers.During a hearing at Peterborough Crown Court earlier this week, Julia Rafaelova, Milan Nemeth, and Skarletta Rafaelova were convicted of multiple charges, including slavery and child abduction after being found guilty following trial.
On 22 November 2013, social services attended the victim’s address where her cousin Skarletta Rafaelova, 32, translated false information, and after receiving corroborating accounts from Julia the victim was forced to give the child up for adoption. ‘Forcing a mother to give up her child to allow further financial gain is utterly despicable and a trauma the victim will never get over.
Shortly afterwards, they started using the victim to claim benefits after claiming she had serious mental health issues.
