Up to 27 million Americans have already had the flu, with up to 250,000 flu-related hospitalizations and anywhere from 7,000 to 20,000 deaths reported so far. Groups at high risk for flu-related complications are similar to those who are at risk of complications from Covid-19, including older adults, those with chronic illnesses, young infants, and pregnant women.covers four different influenza strains and is thus known as a “quadrivalent” vaccine.
If you’ve had the flu, you may have some immunity to that particular strain, but you still need protection from the other strains that are circulating. People ages 65 years and older should get the high-dose quadrivalent flu vaccine, which offers four times the amount of antigen levels as the standard flu vaccine, giving this high-risk group more protection from severe illness. Pregnant women are at high risk for developing complications from the flu, and are strongly recommended to receive a flu vaccine this season.
The one piece of positive news on the tripledemic front is that hospitalizations appear to have peaked for children with RSV complications. But while the daily new hospitalization rate has dropped in much of the U.S., pediatric hospital beds, in the intensive care units and general units, remain filled with children still recovering from RSV.
