President Trump reportedly plans to announce that the federal government will begin distributing millions of rapid Covid-19 tests to states this week and will urge governors to use them to physically reopen schools, which isPresident Donald Trump at the White House on September 23, 2020.

The company’s rapid test is notable because it is low cost, easy-to-use and delivers results in roughly 15 minutes without requiring special technology, whereas previously a vast majority of Covid-19 tests had to be sent to high-grade medical laboratories to be processed, which took several days or even weeks and led to backlogs.

Rapid tests do have some downsides, according to Dr. Jeffrey Engel of the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists, who has that schools generally do not have the capacity or expertise to report mass testing results, which could artificially lower infection counts sent to state and federal officials.
