The Commerce Department said Friday it will ban Chinese mobile apps TikTok and WeChat from app stores in the U.S. starting Sunday night,
The deal between the Trump administration and TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, for the video-sharing app would involve, among other provisions, taking on American investors and board members, and moving its global headquarters to the U.S. A deal is expected as soon as Friday. The official said the government "could have done a lot more" to penalize TikTok and WeChat, but it took a lighter approach to TikTok in particular because the app counts 100 million users in the U.S.
TikTok said in a statement Friday that the company has "already committed to unprecedented levels of additional transparency and accountability well beyond what other apps are willing to do" as part of its proposed deal with the administration. Those measures include third-party audits and government oversight over U.S. data security. It has long said that it would not share data with the Chinese government.
