President Donald Trump on Friday formally announced his plan to nominate Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan to be the next ambassador to Russia when current ambassador Jon Huntsman steps down later this year.in August, when he didn’t deny reports that he was planning to tap Sullivan for the post and telling reporters that Sullivan "could very well be” his next envoy to Russia."He's somebody that's being put up and respected very much," Trump said at the time.
Sullivan would then become Trump’s Russia liaison at a time when relations between Washington and Moscow have cooled considerably, as Trump’s interactions with Russian President Vladimir Putin continue to come under heavy scrutiny. The president is also battling a widening impeachment investigation over his push for a Ukraine-led investigation into the Bidens that has ensnared top officials at the State Department.
The U.S. has also struggled with the Kremlin's aggression in cyberspace and its intrusion into other international affairs — most notably in Venezuela and Syria — and new diplomatic forays with North Korea, as well as the deterioration of several arms control treaties, including the longstanding Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces treaty.
Sullivan was confirmed by the Senate in 2017 by a 94-6 vote, a sizable margin in the polarized age of Trump. And Sullivan
