The president has long argued that mail-in voting is innately fraudulent despite himself voting absentee in Florida.
on Tuesday, “Whether you call it Vote by Mail or Absentee Voting, in Florida the election system is Safe and Secure, Tried and True.”
Trump credited the GOP’s control of Florida, in contrast with Nevada’s Democratic-controlled state government, claiming, “Florida’s Voting system has been cleaned up , so in Florida I encourage all to request a Ballot & Vote by Mail!”that suggests Trump’s all-out assault on mail-in voting could damage his reelection prospects, with many Trump voters – including 15% in Florida – saying that “getting a ballot in the mail would make them less likely to vote in November.
Asked about Trump’s tweet at a briefing on Tuesday, White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany seemed unaware that Trump endorsed mail-in voting in his tweet, stating “The president has always said that absentee voting is different from mass mail-out voting like Nevada is trying to do, which leads to mass fraud."
McEnany doubled down on that framing later in the briefing, saying Trump has “always made the distinction” between “mass mail-out voting” and absentee voting.Florida seems likely to see what would reasonably be considered mass mail-in voting. The Florida Department of Elections last week that more than 3.8 million mail-in ballots were requested for the state’s August 18 primary, of which 700,000 have already been cast. One source of Trump’s newfound concerns over mail-in voting in Florida may be the partisan split of the primary ballots that have been returned so far. Democrats in the state have sent in over 320,000 mail-in ballots, while Republicans sent in just 260,000.
