JUST IN: President Trump threatens to make the U.S. funding freeze to the World Health Organization permanent.
Trump's letter states that his administration has been in discussions with the organization,"but action is needed quickly." It says a review confirmed many of the issues Trump previously raised.
"[I]f the World Health Organization does not commit to major substantive improvements within the next 30 days, I will make my temporary freeze of United States funding to the World Health Organization permanent and reconsider our membership in the organization," the letter reads.Dr. Patrice Harris, president of the American Medical Association,that:"Cutting funding to the WHO — rather than focusing on solutions — is a dangerous move at a precarious moment for the world.
The United Nations secretary-general in April said that there will be a time to review actions and learn lessons but the time is not during an ongoing crisis. "It is also not the time to reduce the resources for the operations of the World Health Organization or any other humanitarian organization in the fight against the virus," the U.N. secretary-general
