Chastang-Fournier K-8 School has been classified as one of the state's failing schools. Tonight, the school’s principal is saying an influx of state money earmarked for failing schools is already making a difference. Scores are improving, she says, because of the Turnaround School Initiative. Governor Kay Ivey, a former teacher, paid a visit to the school today to see firsthand how the state's money is being put to good use.
The state invested $15 million to transform low performing schools and to support their communities. Principal Veronica Coleman says Chastang-Fournier received $720k. She says they’re using those state funds to do things that would normally tie their hands. Like retaining teachers through sign on bonuses, the Children’s Health Insurance Program where students take home food for the weekend, and the arts among other things.
