A bridge that dates back to when the NJ Turnpike was built in the 1950s is scheduled for replacement.

The 805-foot long bridge over the Raritan River in New Brunswick will get a $172.5 million makeover from the bottom up. Plans call for replacing the bridge deck, repairing structural steel, strengthening the bridge’s superstructure, and repairing the median barrier and guard rail on the roads leading to the bridge, said Tom Feeney, a Turnpike Authority spokesman.
A contract was awarded in December to D’Annunzio & Sons, Inc. of South Plainfield, which was the lowest of seven bidders on the project, which engineers initially estimated to cost $203 million. Construction is scheduled to be completed on the 70-year-old bridge in 2025, Feeney said.
