More than two dozen House Democrats are throwing their support behind Rep. David Trone (D-MD) in the Maryland Senate race, an early boost for the lawmaker in what will be a competitive primary for the seat next year.

Twenty-seven Democrats endorsed Trone in a letter sent out by his campaign Monday morning, featuring high-profile names such as Rep. Adam Schiff , who is mounting his own Senate bid in California; Rep. Annie Kuster , chairwoman of the New Democrat Coalition; and Rep. Colin Allred , who is challenging Sen. Ted Cruz in Texas. The list includes Democrats spanning progressive districts to key battleground states.

The slate of endorsements signals party support for Trone in a crowded field of candidates seeking the Democratic nomination to replace retiring Sen. Ben Cardin next year. Trone has emerged as an early front-runner in the race alongside Angela Alsobrooks, who has also received a number of high-profile endorsements in her primary bid.

Trone has vowed to fund much of his campaign with his own money. The House Democrat raised $9.8 million during the second quarter of 2024, according to filings with the Federal Election Commission, nearly all of which came from a personal loan. His campaign spent roughly $4.7 million during the same time period, ending the quarter with $5.3 million cash on hand.Meanwhile, Alsobrooks raised $1.7 million since launching her bid in May, according to second quarter fundraising reports with the FEC.

Cardin announced in early May he would not seek reelection in the Old Line State, opening up his seat for the first time since 2006. At least five Democrats, including Trone and Alsobrooks, have entered the race to succeed Cardin, which is expected to be “Solid Democrat.”
