New York City Mayor-elect Eric Adams appointed two Asian American women to be deputy mayors this week.
Monday, she described her upbringing as the child of Filipino immigrants. After they came to the U.S., her parents worked multiple jobs. The family struggled financially, and Torres-Springer said they relied on Section 8 vouchers and food stamps through most of her childhood.
“It is the story of many New Yorkers, and as a city of immigrants, we all carry echoes of the choices that led our families to leave their homes and strike out for a better future,” she said. “My ancestors, like many of yours, were strivers and survivors, generation after generation, and so I stand here today because of their strength and resilience.”“We’re at a critical juncture.
