CLEVELAND, Ohio – Two East Cleveland police officers admitted Monday to stealing more than $14,000 from residents while on duty.
The pleas are among the first involving a longstanding investigation into the department. County prosecutors have charged more than 10 officers, including the department’s former chief, Scott Gardner, who has denied the charges. He is accused of tax charges and theft in office. Cole pulled over a man on Sept. 22, 2020, and stole $800 in cash and about $400 worth of marijuana from him, then wrote him a ticket, prosecutors said. The ticket had the signatures of both Cole and an unidentified East Cleveland police supervisor on it, prosecutors said. Warner-Sims stole $1,300 that he found during a Nov. 8, 2020, traffic stop, prosecutors said.
Later that same day, Cole and Warner-Sims stopped a man who said he was on his way to a funeral home to pay for his mother’s services when the officers grabbed $4,000 of the man’s cash, officials and prosecutors said.“At least they were accountable,” said Mariah Crenshaw, a longtime critic of the department. “But I’m not going to get excited until I learn how much time they’ll get. This is something, no doubt. I just wonder how many other victims there were.
