Two Florida towns grapple with their past racial legacies after being known as 'sundown towns', where rules were in place to keep Black people out and violence was threatened after sunset.

Another telltale sign: the census. “Sundown towns” saw their Black population decline dramatically from one decade to the next.

Researchers at the history center have confirmed that at least four Black people and two white people were killed. Associated Press reports at the time said six Black people were killed. Oral histories collected about the incident report dozens of people killed and as many as 60 people. In the early 2000s, one of those Black families was that of George Oliver. He moved his family to the city in 2002, and in 2018, he became the first Black city commissioner elected in Ocoee.

“In ideology and ethnic makeup and political spectrum, it is like night and day because our city is thriving,” Oliver said. “Our city is probably one the most diverse cities in Central Florida right now.”
