On Friday afternoon, Crystal Quiroz, a server at the Bad Boyz Smoked BBQ, in Uvalde, Texas, stared at her cell phone and watched police officials hold a press conference, at least their fifth in four days. They were again describing their response tothat had imperilled her nine-year-old son and killed nineteen of his schoolmates. Quiroz, who is thirty-four, began taking notes on a waitress pad where she normally scribbled orders for tacos and brisket quesadillas.
Quiroz and her sister Carolina, who is also in her thirties and works as a server at the restaurant, left immediately. The teacher had told them that shots had been fired near Room 105, where her sister’s ten-year-old son was, in the fourth grade.Their mother, Concepción, called and said that she was already at the school. The police were blocking parents from entering Robb Elementary, and Concepción urged them to go to the town civic center, where evacuated children were being taken.
The police disclosures haunted Quiroz and her family. Could Jayce have been saved if officers had stormed the classroom sooner? Given that the police department was a mile and a half from the school, why did it take officers twelve minutes to arrive? In the restaurant, Quiroz seethed with Carolina and their cousin’s wife, Amber, who co-owns the restaurant. “They said they were waiting on keys to open the doors,” Carolina said.
