The Tunnel2Towers Foundation, a nonprofit organization, announced Monday that it will pay the mortgages of two police officers who were recently killed in El Monte, California.
Michael Paredes, 42, and Joseph Santana, 31, were ambushed a week ago while they were responding to a call. Justin Flores, an alleged gang member, shot both of them to death before he was ultimately shot and killed himself by other officers on the scene.
"Corporal Michael Paredes and Officer Joseph Santana were both husbands and fathers, raised in the city of El Monte and had deep ties to the community they served," Tunnel to Towers wrote in an Instagram post."You reached out and touched their families with your generosity in their darkest hours. Thank you for supporting America’s heroes and their families.
Tunnel to Towers was created in New York firefighter Stephen Siller's honor. He ran through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the Twin Towers to help on 9/11. Today, the group pays the mortgages of first responders and military members killed in the line of duty. Flores's funeral was paid for by Los Angeles County because of a policy enacted by District Attorney George Gascon in December 2020.Paredes is survived by his wife and two children, and Santana is survived by his wife and three children.
