At the ForbesCIO Summit, Niantic's Niniane Wang reflects on what's changed since Silicon Valley's MeToo moment. 'In 2019, silence speaks very loudly, too,' she says

Two years ago, Silicon Valley grappled with its own #metoo movement, when female engineers and tech entrepreneurs started to publicize accounts of harassment, stories that led to executive ousters and a push to promote more female leaders. But some women worried that once the shock of revelations faded, retaliation would follow — and it would be even harder to succeed as a woman in tech., 39, says it was worth speaking out.

Wang, a former chief technology officer at ecommerce site Minted, joined Niantic after it bought her social video startup Evertoon in 2017. She now leads about 95 people building the technology for multiplayer augmented reality games“People have talked about the necessity of building an inclusive team, especially as we talk about making global products, I suggest that as you build out leadership teams it's really important to make sure you have women and minorities," Wang said.

"From a psychology factor we ask if the game enhances relationships with others, with a phone we see that it can [negatively] affect social interaction," said Wang."[In designing] we want to enhance rather than detract from face to face social interaction."
