Type 2 diabetes has the greatest toll on the life expectancy of women, younger people, and smokers, say UK researchers.
The authors of the study explained that: "People in England with diabetes are known to have a 50-70% higher risk of dying prematurely than individuals without diabetes." However, little is known, they said, about how demographic and lifestyle factors might affect the size of this risk. The increased risk of early death was greater for women with type 2 diabetes than for men with type 2 diabetes - 96% versus 74%. The researchers commented that they were "surprised" by this finding because type 2 diabetes is "generally assumed to have a greater effect on men's health than on women's", they said.
After modelling by Mike Stedman of Res Consortium - a healthcare consultancy in Andover - Dr Heald and colleagues found that when compared with people of the same age in the general population, people with type 2 diabetes who were:
