School closures due to the pandemic have affected more than 1 billion students in over 160 countries, said United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres—as he urged countries throughout the world to make the reopening of schools 'a top priority'
, authored by Guterres, which stated that the world is confronting a"generational catastrophe that could waste untold human potential, undermine decades of progress, and exacerbate entrenched inequalities."
Guterres notes that, even before the devastating fallout from the coronavirus pandemic, the world faced"," with more than 250 million children out of school, and only 25% of secondary school students in developing countries leaving school"with basic skills." In particular, the U.N. chief focused on the detrimental impact of school closings on very young children, as at least 40 million children worldwide have missed out on education in their"critical pre-school year."that"learners with disabilities, those in minority or disadvantaged communities, displaced and refugee students and those in remote areas are at highest risk of being left behind.
