Coronavirus infections in the U.S. exceed 5.1 million, while the death toll stood at more than 164,500; deaths world-wide topped 741,000
Total coronavirus infections in the U.S. exceed 5.1 million, accounting for about a quarter of the world-wide total, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. The nation’s death toll stood at more than 164,500, while deaths world-wide topped 741,000, according to Johns Hopkins data.
As of Aug. 10, the one-week average of new cases in the U.S. was about 54,409, below the two-week average of about 57,433, according to the Journal analysis of Johns Hopkins data, suggesting infections are broadly on the decline. The one-week average was lower in 37 states. In nearly half the states, however, the seven-day moving average of tests per 1,000 people is lower this week, according to Johns Hopkins.
Deaths in the U.S. appear to be holding steady, with the one-week average just over 1,051, compared with a two-week average just under 1,049. But the one-week average is higher than the two-week in 17 states and Washington, D.C., suggesting death rates are continuing to climb there.
