The U.S. is expected to announce Thursday that it will significantly cut the number of personnel at its embassy in Kabul, amid the worsening security situation in Afghanistan
WASHINGTON—The U.S. is expected to announce Thursday that it will significantly cut the number of personnel at the U.S. Embassy in Kabul, amid fresh concerns that the rapidly deteriorating security situation will make it more difficult to evacuate American personnel if the government falls following the American pullout of forces.
The U.S. is expected to pull thousands of personnel out of the U.S. Embassy, according to U.S. officials. About 5,000 civilians and military personnel are based at the embassy and at the nearby Hamid Karzai International Airport. The reductions are expected to include American diplomatic personnel and contractors, some Afghans, and nationals of third countries who provide security and other logistical support to the massive complex.
U.S. military aircraft will be used to assist in the evacuation. The U.S. Embassy isn’t expected to close immediately, according to U.S. officials. A new U.S. intelligence assessment concludes that Kabul could fall to the Taliban militants as soon as the next one to three months, according to other officials.
On Monday, senior national-security officials met at the White House to discuss Afghanistan, including a discussion that focused on the size of the American diplomatic mission in Kabul. The meeting followed the collapse of five provincial capitals, the latest gains by the Taliban through its swift offensive on provincial capitals that has surprised even the most pessimistic of Afghanistan watchers, including the American intelligence community and the U.S. military.
