American journalist Danny Fenster was sentenced to 11 years in prison in Myanmar, despite calls from U.S. officials for his release
An American journalist detained in Myanmar was sentenced to 11 years in prison, his employer said, despite U.S. officials having repeatedly called for his release.
Danny Fenster, 37, was arrested at Yangon International Airport on May 24 as he was heading to the U.S. to visit his family. He has since been detained at Yangon’s Insein Prison with little access to his lawyer or relatives, and later charged with five criminal offenses. Mr. Fenster is managing editor for the Yangon-based news outlet Frontier Myanmar.
