In an interview for the Changing the Game podcast, Manuel spoke about the importance of athletes – all athletes – using their platforms to call out injustices, and pointed to the missed opportunities there have been in the past.

Olympic champion Simone Manuel knows her experiences and opinions carry weight in conversations about racism and diversity. Racism is a societal problem yet, too often, it’s only Black and brown people who are asked to address it.

“That’s what gets exhausting to me, because I feel like the questions that I’m asked to answer, I feel like everyone should be educated on how to answer them.” But the topic has taken on greater urgency following the killing of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, as America reckons with the recognition that our entire society is rigged against people of color. Athletes have been particularly outspoken on the need for change, with many drawing from their own experiences.

“We all need communities around us that are going to uplift us,” she added. “That's exactly what the world needs to do, is just uplift everybody because we're humans and we're all capable of doing whatever, whatever our identity is or wherever we come from.” “I had a lot of conversations with my sports psychologist, Robert Andrews,” Manuel said. “It's such a cliche to control what you can control, but it's something that's extremely important. Like, I can't control when I'm going to compete again. But what I can control is when I wake up in the morning, I'm going to do everything I possibly can to still reach my goals because someday swimming is going to come back.
