The Prime Minister is bowing to Liz Truss, Suella Braverman and Kemi Badenoch - and revealing himself to be weak
The strangest thing about this whole affair is the way it undermines Sunak’s own unique selling point as a future-facing Mr Stability, the man who steadied the ship after Liz Truss, who offers business the calm certainty it needs.
Only this Monday, Transport Secretary Mark Harper told an electric vehicle conference: “With more countries following the UK’s lead, we cannot miss out on the automotive jobs, investment and technology that we really want to make sure comes to the United Kingdom.” Worst of all for thet Prime Minister is the perception of an inexperienced, weak politician who dithers, delays and doesn’t follow his gut instinct. He’s undeniably been sceptical about Johnson’s net-zero agenda, yet has spent years echoing it – and the whole of this year pondering what to do.
With his personal ratings showing that a massive 73 per cent of voters now think Sunak is “out of touch”, this feels like him trying to show a fake mateyness with “ordinary” Brits.
