I badly want to pick Carla Esparza on Saturday night to get her first title defense ever. For whatever reason she’s constantly picked against and time and time again she pulls it out. Esparza has six straight wins against really tough opponents including Rose Namajunas and Marina Rodriguez.
The issue on Saturday night against Zhang Weili? Her usual dominance on the ground won’t be as much of a factor. Esparza was an All-American wrestler in both high school and college and has utilized her major advantage on the mat throughout her UFC career. She loves to grab hold of opponents, drag them to the ground and either submit them or punish them with ground-and-pound.
She’s had a ton of success with this against more standup strikers who can’t stop her grappling. Zhang is a different beast and has great takedown defense. She’s also exceptionally strong for someone her size . Esparza is not a great striker. If she fails to get takedowns against Zhang and is forced to stand, I see this being a lopsided decision. Let’s see if Esparza proves us all wrong…again.
