'A national treasure': Houston coach Dana Holgorsen fondly remembers late mentor Mike Leach
UH coach Dana Holgorsen played at Iowa Wesleyan for the late Mike Leach , who last coached against his protégé in 2019 when the Cougars played Washington State.SHREVEPORT, La. — University of Houston coach Dana Holgorsen had dinner plans with Mike Leach.
Two weeks ago, Leach was in Houston on a recruiting trip. As he often did, Holgorsen was set to have dinner with his former Iowa Wesleyan coach, mentor and close friend of more than 30 years.Leach died of heart-related complications Dec. 13 . On Tuesday, Holgorsen was among the crowd in Starkville, Miss., for a memorial service to celebrate the coach’s life.
“He’s one of a kind,” Holgorsen said. “He’s a national icon. He’s a national treasure. He changed the game of football.”Leach’s coaching tree includes former and current head coaches Holgorsen, Lincoln Riley, Dave Aranda, Sonny Cumbie. Seth Littrell, Art Briles, Kliff Kingsbury, Ruffin McNeil, Josh Heupel, Neal Brown, Eric Morris, Ken Wilson and assistant coaches Wes Welker, Alex Grinch, Brandon Jones, Bill Bedenbaugh, Robert Anae and more.
“The coaching tree is spectacular,” Holgorsen said. “The celebration was unbelievable. There were so many stories.”
