Houston DC Doug Belk on response to SMU disaster: 'It starts with me'
Houston defensive coordinator Doug Belk. after one of the worst showings in school history last weekend against SMU, says the Cougars' defenders must “look in the mirror and see who is going to respond.”“We got knocked down and we fell hard,” the Cougars’ defensive coordinator said Tuesday, “but we didn’t get knocked out.
The Cougars have dealt with late-game collapses, overtime losses and season-ending injuries to key starters. But as bad as those things have been, nothing compared to. UH surrendered nine straight touchdown drives to begin the game, 11 of 12 overall and allowed a program-record 77 points. SMU quarterback Tanner Mordecai threw for 379 yards and nine touchdowns.
Only once did the Cougars make a stop, forcing a punt in the third quarter that drew boos from the crowd at Gerald J. Ford Stadium. With three games left in the regular season, beginning Saturday against Temple, Belk said the Cougars must “look in the mirror and see who is going to respond.”Among those that played the majority of the snaps Saturday, four had a pass coverage grade of 61.1 or worse, according to Pro Football Focus.
“That’s not really what we’ve been,” Belk said. “That’s not the brand of defense we want to put on the field.” This is not the same UH defense that was top-10 nationally last season. Four starters from that team are currently on NFL rosters. Inconsistency and inexperience have been factors. So, too, have coverage breakdowns and miscommunications and what coaches have described as “uncharacteristic mistakes.”
