The UK government has confirmed that there will not be an extra bank holiday in 2025 to commemorate 80 years since VE Day. VE Day, which marks Victory in Europe Day, is celebrated on May 8th each year.
A spokesperson from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport has confirmed that the celebrations to commemorate VE day will not involve an extra bank holiday in 2025.
VE Day, Victory in Europe Day, celebrates the end of World War II on 8 May each year. In 2020, the early May bank holiday was moved from 4 May to 8 May so that it would fall on the 75th anniversary of VE Day.There has been speculation over recent days that in 2025, there will be an extra UK bank holiday to mark 80 years since VE day. But the government has now confirmed there will be the usual amount of bank holidays next year.
A spokesperson from the DCMS said: "The 80th anniversaries of VE and VJ Day will be moments of huge significance for our country, and the Government is committed to commemorating the occasions appropriately. "That is why we have announced more than £10 million for events. We will announce the government's plans to mark the occasion shortly.Ordinarily, there are a total of eight bank holidays each year in England and Wales, with some exceptions for special circumstances. Scotland has nine, and Northern Ireland has ten.
In 2022, the UK had two extra bank holidays, one on 3 June 2022 to celebrate Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee, and another on 19 September for the Queen’s funeral.
