Brits are advised to keep their windows closed for the next four weeks
This isn't due to soaring temperatures - in fact, the Met Office predicts a more moderate climate over the coming weeks, with temperatures expected to hover between 18-25C towards the end of August and beginning of September. The real reason behind this advice? Spiders.Spider season is upon us, with these eight-legged creatures making their way into British homes from mid-August until early October. These arachnids enter our homes to mate before seeking shelter for the winter.
So, if you spot a spider scurrying across your living room, it's likely a male. Spiders can enter through any small opening: cracks in window sills, gaps in brickwork, spaces around windows, or under doors, reports Derbyshire Live. They can squeeze through the tiniest of gaps, but if your home's brickwork, skirting boards and windows are all in good condition and you've taken measures to seal any holes, there's still one more way spiders can get in.
Open windows are an open invitation for spiders, who can scale the side of your house and enter through an open window. In late summer, when the weather is still warm enough to warrant opening windows for a cool breeze, spiders will seize the opportunity. Spiders are known to be nocturnal creatures, hence leaving a window open overnight could potentially invite them in. The simplest way to avoid this is by keeping your windows shut both during the day and night.
However, encountering a spider in your home isn't necessarily a bad thing. Despite the common fear of spiders, they can actually be beneficial for your household. They consume flies and other insects, helping to keep your home free from pests. This can also aid in disease prevention. Furthermore, spiders pose no threat to you or your pets as there are no dangerous species of house spiders in Britain.
