The UK will set up a brigade headquarters in Estonia, with more than 1,000 extra troops being allocated, Ben Wallace said
leaders will officially sign off on a new “strategic concept”, which names both Russia and China as threats to the West.
They will also approve a “new force model”, in which more troops will be deployed to eastern Europe so Nato can fight a full-scale war immediately in the event of a Russian invasion. The number of Nato troops in a state of readiness will rise from its current level of 40,000 to 300,000 by the end of next year. The UK will continue to provide around 10 per cent of the alliance’s overall strength, a Government source confirmed, with extra troops committed to join Nato deployments at short notice.
A spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence said: “We are significantly increasing the availability of UK forces to Nato, which will include the majority of our maritime forces, extra air squadrons and increasing the number of land brigade-sized units.”
