Ukrainian Congress' Pavlo Bandriwsky asked Franklin Park for still-usable retired safety equipment to embattled Ukraine.
Franklin Park Village President Barrett Pedersen, center, presented Ukrainian Congress Committee of America Illinois Division Vice President Pavlo Bandriwsky and Nortia Logistics President Ellen Lopatkina with a medic's first aid kit donated by the Franklin Park Fire Department at the village board meeting Monday evening.
“We’re pleased to get monetary support, of course, but many local governments have surplus personal protective equipment like body armor and military-grade helmets,” Pavlo Bandriwsky told elected officials. “The Ukrainian civilian defense force needs this.”"We need protective gear out on the front lines," Ukrainian Congress Committee of America Illinois Division Vice President Pavlo Bandriwsky said at the Franklin Park Village Board meeting.
“They’re bombing churches, mosques, synagogues, maternity hospitals, theaters where children are being housed. Basically, the Russians want to commit genocide and eliminate Ukrainians as a people. This is a fight for survival, a fight between good versus evil,” he said. “We’ve got a plane leaving this week and another one departing on May 7,” company president Ellen Lopatkina told the Village Board. “Our goal is to get the equipment to the front lines.”
Bandriwsky cited the 1994 Budapest Memorandum, an agreement signed by the U.S., Great Britain, Ukraine and Russia to protect Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity. Bandriwsky said: “We have a tremendous appreciation for the Polish people. The Polish National Alliance and the Polish American Congress held a radiothon last month where they raised $115,000 for humanitarian aid. All Americans have given us a tremendous reception --the Polish in particular.”In addition to police and firefighting equipment, Bandriwsky said his organization also seeks IFAKs, or individual first aid kits.
