Russia says it has downed drones over Crimea and its own territory - while Vladimir Putin's forces have launched an air assault on Odesa. Meanwhile, the Institute for the Study of War says a 'significant breakthrough' is possible for Ukraine if three assumptions hold.
China, North Korea and Russia love their military parades, where they take the opportunity to showcase an impressive array of military equipment to both domestic and international audiences. However, this conflict has demonstrated clearly that equipment does not translate easily to credible military capability.
But, to avoid getting embroiled in an academic debate, the conflict has also highlighted the need for military forces to adapt, evolve and innovate in response to the realities of war. The"tools" of war remain relatively similar to those decades ago, but the ability to innovate and exploit technology has been a crucial differentiator in this conflict.
Which leads to my final point. Russia's"medieval" method of warfare is casualty intensive, whereas, since the Second World War, the West has invested in ways to be less profligate with human life. A member of Odesa Regional Prosecutor's Office personnel was pictured inspecting damaged buildings after the missile strike, which damaged port infrastructure, a grain silo and an abandoned hotel. One woman was also injured in the attack. The Kremlin has reacted after a Ukrainian man who served in one of Adolf Hitler's Waffen SS units during the Second World War was presented to Canada's parliament last week as a hero.
