Ukraine's lawyers said as hearings in the case opened on Tuesday that Russia bankrolled a"campaign of intimidation and terror" by rebels in eastern Ukraine starting in 2014. The presence of the International Atomic Energy Agency provides additional protection, the state-owned news agency TASS reported.

"The Russians have played this card [but] within a matter of weeks the area will have dried out and therefore it opens up that flank potentially to attack again. "It's a 1,200km frontline. If Russia were to spread its forces evenly, it's one every six metres. It's not very many, they're not very deep defences.

As we reported earlier, President Zelenskyy has visited the Kherson region in eastern Ukraine after the collapse of the Kakhovka dam. "It is with a certain horror that we look at the news coming out," said Mr Tollefsen, adding that World War Two mines found underwater in Denmark in 2015 were still active.

We reported earlier this morning that the Ukrainian governor of the region said more than 600 sq km of Kherson was underwater and that 2,000 people were evacuated.Volodymyr Zelenskyy has visited the Kherson region this morning as the area grapples with the aftermath of devastating flooding. Mr Zelenskyy added that it was"important" to allocate funds to compensate residents and to develop a programme to help businesses affected in the Kherson region.Russian forces and authorities in occupied areas responded to the flooding after the collapse of the Kakhovka dam with"a great degree of disorganisation" that worsened harm to civilians, according to the Institute for the Study of War.
