Yesterday afternoon we brought you news that the Russian Ministry of Defence had announced that Chief of the General Staff Army General Valery Gerasimov would be taking over as theatre commander in Ukraine.
You may remember that yesterday we reported how Igor Girkin, former commander of Russian militants in Donbas and a prominent milblogger, heavily implied that he would support the removal of Mr Putin from office.Putin's message to the world that he's ready to go long However, Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy denied the suggestion, saying it was still under Ukrainian control.
Soledar would be an important gain for Russian troops, as capturing it may help them in their assault on the strategic Ukrainian city of Bakhmut, which is nearby. Russian commanders in the south and east of Ukraine are employing airborne forces as an"elite rapid reaction force", the UK's Ministry of Defence has said.
The battle for the mining town of Soledar is raging on in eastern Ukraine today after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy denied it had been captured by the Russians. Russia has struggled to cement control over the town, which would be their most substantial gain since August after a series of retreats before Ukrainian counter-offensives in the east and south.
We'll be bringing you the latest updates throughout the day, but to get you started, here's a quick recap of what's happened overnight: Russian private military firm Wagner Group said it had completed its capture of the salt mining town Soledar in eastern Ukraine - but Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has denied this.Russia and Ukraine have agreed on an exchange of 40 prisoners of war each, according to Russian and Ukrainian officials.
The capture of the strategic town would be Moscow's most substantial gain since a series of retreats throughout much of the second half of last year; Christopher Parry, 28, and Andrew Bagshaw, 48, were last seen on Friday leaving Kramatorsk for Soledar. Samuel Ramani, associate fellow at the Royal United Services Institute, said the head of the Russian mercenary group has had a"long-standing" rivalry with defence minister Sergei Shoigu.
