The Russian-installed deputy governor of Ukraine's Kherson region said on Friday that a 24hr curfew had been imposed in Kherson city, amid what he said was likely Ukrainian offensive against the city. There has been recent speculation that Moscow's commanders may be considering abandoning Kherson city, just north of Crimea.

As Vladimir Putin orders civilians in Kherson to be evacuated, defence analyst for the Royal United Services Institute, Dr Alexandra Walmsley, has said the situation there is"murky". But the latest comments appeared to be the first time Mr Putin has endorsed the evacuations personally.
