They were headed home Feb. 23, but when Russia invaded Ukraine the next day, they were essentially marooned for several more months.

Seven Ukrainian sailors who have been aboard their vessel since mid-July, including several months in Philadelphia’s port, finally got to disembark Wednesday.

They were planning to head toward home Feb. 23, but their situation changed dramatically the next day when Russia invaded Ukraine, leaving them trapped far from their families,“That was very difficult,” said Inspector Barbara Shipley of the International Transport Workers’ Federation . They remained on board at Philadelphia’s port since then, the story said, because of immigration rules, maritime law and a monetary claim against the boat. A busted boiler complicated things, knocking out the heat for a while.
