The World Health Organization’s Europe office began discussions with Russia to try to obtain more information about the experimental COVID-19 vaccine the country recently approved. Russia’s vaccine has so far only been tested in a few dozen people.

The World Health Organization’s Europe office senior emergency official Catherine Smallwood, said Thursday Aug. 20, 2020, the agency had begun “direct discussions” with Russia to try obtaining more information about the experimental COVID-19 vaccine the country recently approved.

LONDON — The World Health Organization’s Europe office said it has begun discussions with Russia to try to obtain more information about the experimental COVID-19 vaccine the country recently approved. WHO’s Europe director Dr. Hans Kluge said the agency welcomed all advances in vaccine development but that every vaccine must submit to the same clinical trials.Kluge noted that Russia has a long history of developing and administering vaccines, including those for yellow fever and polio.

“We’re not going through a rushed job of trying to jump to conclusions here,” Smallwood said. “We want to take our time to really understand where the vaccine’s at and to get as full information as possible on the steps that have already been taken.”

The situation is dire. A new report from Marie Stopes International found that between January and June, across 37 countries, 2 million fewer women received reproductive healthcare than during the same time period the previous year. India accounts for 1.3 million of those women. (Abortions are considered essential services under India’s months-long lockdown, but most women were not informed of the clause.) The study anticipates that the lack of reproductive healthcare during this period will cause 1.5 million unsafe abortions, 900,000 unwanted pregnancies, and 3,000 deaths.
