A survey by the NUS found 37 per cent of students were non-drinkers in 2022/23, compared with 21 per cent five years ago
“Previously that’s been non-accessible for those who don’t drink as it’s just a big barrel of alcohol, whereas now we’re encouraging halls to make a barrel of non-alcoholic punch or provide non-alcoholic drinks for people to enjoy,” Ms Whelan said.
While students who want to party will still be able to go out and experience the city’s famous nightlife, the union is now making an effort to offer “something different”, particularly given increased concerns around student loneliness, Mr Beale said. “There probably were more events that were more profit driven in the past. Normally that means wet sales behind the bar, which would encourage a drinking culture. I think there’s been a move away from that and we’re looking at the overall student experience, trying best to have something for everyone.”
According to Mr Beale, there has been a “real assessment and a sort of self-critique” since the Covid-19 pandemic about what it is that unions should be offering to students.
