Akhigbe spent 20 years at the university as a tenured professor and was the holder of an endowed chair, a prestigious position that allowed Akhigbe to conduct high-level research. University officials initially targeted 113 professors for layoffs, but that number ultimately was reduced to 66 after retirements and negotiations with the faculty union.
