If University of Alabama faculty approve the current proposed curriculum, some students may be able to graduate without taking a college-level history, literature or language course.
Students at the University of Alabama could soon be required to take fewer writing, humanities and history courses as faculty vote on a major change to general education requirements this week., projected to roll out in the fall of 2025, is shaved down by about 16 credit hours, expands math options and reduces the amount of writing, fine arts, history and literature courses that are currently required.
The change comes after nearly four years of research from a faculty task force, which has been working to create a new model for undergraduate learning since 2018. Administrators say they’re modeling the overhaul after other institutions, many of which require fewer credit hours of general coursework.
“It’s definitely a good first step, but it does need to include additional players who may be impacted,” he added.Proponents of the change say reduced credit requirements would allow greater flexibility to double major or take more specialized courses, and that it introduces a set of advanced education requirements for graduates, rather than just the basics.
Mackenzi Dugan, a recent graduate who worked a stint as a high school history teacher in Florida, said she saw a similar pattern in the K-12 classroom. Now, she’s even more concerned about the kind of education her former students will receive after they graduate. “This curriculum change will serve as yet another instance of The University of Alabama setting the standard amongst our peers,” said SGA spokeswoman Trinity Hunter. The task force used a campus-wide survey in 2019, as well as several focused reports on student opinion in 2020, to draft a series of proposals, including ones that would tie broader themes, like human culture and social responsibility, into pathways students could take.
