Sara Sorribes Tormo wins the WTA Tennis in The Land singles title.CLEVELAND, Ohio — Sara Sorribes Tormo of Spain capped an improbable comeback in Saturday’s singles championship match of the WTA Tennis in The Land tournament, knocking off No. 4 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova in three sets, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, to claim her first title of the season.
“It’s amazing,” Sorribes Tormo said afterward. “One week ago I was out of the tournament, and today I’m here. So yeah, it’s something incredible. I’m very happy.” “At the beginning I was playing a bit more short so she could find more easy shots,” Sorribes Tormo said. “I started playing more longer, deeper balls, and I think that made the difference, because I know I can run. Maybe that’s why she was taking more risks, and maybe that’s why the match turned my way.”
Alexandrova was seeking her fifth career WTA singles title and second title this year. But Sorribes Tormo, who has competed in all three of the WTA 250 tournaments held at the Nautica Entertainment Complex, said she could sense the Cleveland crowd rallying behind her and it reminded her of the city’s underdog reputation.
Sorribes Tormo advanced to the final after snapping the seven-match winning streak of Germany’s Tatjana Maria in Friday’s semifinal. Maria was coming off a title in last week’s WTA 125 Barranquilla tournament.
