Pensions Minister Emma Reynolds MP hope the letters will encourage those on a low income to apply for Pension Credit before December 21, 2024 to ensure successful claimants receive a backdated Winter Fuel Payment.
It has been confirmed by the Department for Work and Pensions that 12.7 million people over State Pension age will receive a letter before the end of November explaining the new eligibility rule changes to Winter Fuel Payments.
Around 10m pensioners, including 850,000 in Scotland, will miss out on a Winter Fuel Payment of between £100 and £300 this year after Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced in July that the annual help for heating bills will only be issued to those over 66 in receipt of a means-tested benefit such as Pension Credit, Tax Credits or Universal Credit .
Alternatively, pensioners can contact the Pension Credit helpline directly to make a claim on 0800 99 1234 - lines are open 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday.Below is an overview of the benefit including who should check eligibility, how to go about it and how much you could get. The benefit tops up income to a minimum of £218.15 per week for single pensioners and £332.95 for couples - more if a person has a disability or caring responsibilities.Other help if you get Pension CreditMixed aged older couples and Pension Credit In May 2019, the law changed so a ‘mixed age couple’ - a couple where one partner is of State Pension age and the other is under it - are considered to be a ‘working age’ couple when checking entitlement to means-tested benefits.
