With children back in school, some Regina parents were surprised to see increased fees for lunchroom supervision.
Lazarou said supervision costs are not provincially funded and the model in place in Regina looks to recover around 20 per cent of costs. Last year the division spent $2.8 million on noon hour supervision.“Like all school divisions, Regina Public Schools continues to face budget challenges as we begin the 2023-24 School Year,” he said.
Regina Public Schools upped lunch fees by 10 per cent. That means fees for kindergarten students rose to $55 per student from $50, and fees for elementary students from Grades 1 through 8 will bump up to $110 from $100. Chapados said he gets the decision comes down to provincial funding, saying the school divisions “take the brunt of the blowback on this but it’s not their fault. They only have so much money.”
