Republican infighting broke out on the floor of the House of Representatives on Tuesday, as a small group of Trump-allied lawmakers blocked the party’s nominee for speaker,Mr McCarthy became the first majority party leader in more than a century in a century to fail to win support in the first round, garnering support from only 203 of his colleagues – trailing new Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries, who attracted 212 votes.
While California Republican Kevin McCarthy enjoyed the support from most of his conservative peers to head the chamber, enough rebelled against him – including Andy Biggs, Matt Gaetz, Paul Gosar and Lauren Boebert – to grind procedures to a halt.
