US Republicans want Donald Trump gone - they just won't say it in public 💬 via ipaperviews
think he is. His forced or voluntary exit from the 2024 primary field cannot come soon enough, but it remains a distant prospect, to say the least. Worse still, the party’s nascent effort to find a successor is an unedifying mess.
The more lucid elements in the Republican elite are fully aware they need to build a larger coalition than the one that lost them the Senate and nearly the House last November, and which twice failed to win Trump the popular vote. And an overgrown fratboy whose swaggering attempt to cancel Disney backfired spectacularly is not the person for the job.
So much for the prospect of a new order – and as per Gramsci, before the new can be born, the old will have to die. That all-too-slow process begins in earnest when Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg unseals his indictment on Tuesday. The other grand juries investigating Trump in far more grievous cases are still slogging through the masses of information laid out for their inspection, but none of them will now have to shoulder the burden of being the first to try and nail him in public.
