With the number of Alzheimer’s cases in South Texas increasing and studies showing Latinos are disproportionately impacted, the health system is planning a major expansion.

Here in the geographic heart of the Texas struggle with Alzheimer’s disease, UT Health San Antonio has made strides in serving Hispanic patients inside the Medical Arts and Research Center, she said. The Center for Brain Health is expected to improve on those successes.

As Henrich recalled, he was approached by Glenn Biggs, a San Antonio business leader who served as the first chairman of UT Health San Antonio. He had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and, as his condition worsened, he looked for help to no avail. In partnership with UT Rio Grande Valley, the Biggs Institute became a National Institute on Aging-Designated Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center. It’s the only one of its kind in the state.

Across UT Health San Antonio practice locations, including its Mays Cancer Center, patient visits increased to 2.6 million in its 2022 fiscal year, up from 2 million in 2021, according to Will Sansom, executive director of media communications. “It has become a real tsunami of healthcare challenges for people all over the United States and all over the world to manage patients with dementia,” he said, adding that Seshadri has already expanded patient care in San Antonio. “The number of patients has basically gone up almost exponentially, as her faculty and staff service these patients.”

Plans call for the center to house 100 medical professionals, including 30 neurologists and 70 other research, clinical and administrative staff to include neuropsychologists.
