Ruben Ruiz, an officer with the Uvalde CISD police department, was then escorted from the scene of last month’s massacre after having his weapon seized, Texas Department of Public Safety Director Steve McCraw told a state Senate committee. McCraw said Ruiz was detained and had his gun taken by other law enforcement officials, though he did not specify which agency did so.
Ruiz’s wife, 44-year-old elementary school teacher Eva Mireles, was fatally shot as she tried to save her fourth-grade students from the gunman who entered her classroom last month. She spent some of her last moments alive on the phone with her husband, who rushed to the scene before being stopped by other law enforcement officers.
“We've got an officer, Officer Ruiz, whose wife called him and said she had been shot and she was dying,” McCraw said. “And what happened to him, is he tried to move forward into the hallway. He was detained, and they took his gun away from him and escorted him off the scene.”Mireles was one of two teachers killed, along with 19 students, in the May 24 mass shooting., Ruiz told first responders at 11:48 a.m. that his wife had called him to say she had been shot.
Law enforcement officers did not enter the room until 12:50 p.m., when they breached the door and fatally shot the gunman, according to the DPS timeline.
