Valentine’s Day can be more than just Singles Awareness Day | Opinion
We’ve made romantic love responsible for filling all of our emotional needs, and that’s not realistic.
My adult enthusiasm for the holiday has been met with cross looks, suspicion and deep doubt from my friends. Every year I hear the same lament from my unpartnered friends. They throw serious shade at Feb. 14 for being “Singles Awareness Day.” Since I was with the same dude for 25 years, I thought their feelings were mostly a response to the seasonal marketing for unimpressive diamonds and discount lingerie.
Her sentiment is understandable. In the last century or so, we’ve made romantic love responsible for filling all of our emotional needs in adulthood. The late conservative writer and professional curmudgeon Florence King described what it was like being a single woman in a college sorority in the 1950s, in her semi-autobiographical masterpiece.
One of my favorite things about Valentine’s season is my February trips to the library, where I spend a lot of time mingling with the hardcovers in the “Blind Date With a Book” section.
