Veterans, families, and community members gathered at the Valparaiso VFW Post 988 Friday for a heartfelt ceremony in honor of POW/MIA Remembrance Day.

“They are unable to be with their loved ones so we join together to pay humble tribute and to bear witness to their continued absence,” said VFW member and Veteran Ryan Kominakis, noting the presence of the ceremonial POW/MIA or Missing Man table that sits in a place of honor at the VFW hall.“I am humbled to be here and to be here and to be surrounded by selfless Veterans and their families,” said guest speaker and local community member Ellen Kapitan.

“When I was in Vietnam, a colonel was killed, and he wrote us a note after he was killed, talking about who all his death affected,” said Soliday. “But at least they had closure. These families don’t.” Butterflies were flown in from Florida to be released at the VFW Post 988 in Valparaiso on Friday, Sept. 15, 2023, in honor of POW/MIA Remembrance Day.
